Aerospace Hall Museum in Exposition Park, designed by Architect Frank Gehry, has experienced extensive water intrusion problems since its opening in 1984. The stated goals for the design team, established by the California Science Center, were to remediate the ineffectual building envelope assemblies to prevent further water intrusion while preserving the integrity of the original design of this architectural icon. Findings of the investigation resulted in recommendations for an extensive renovation program including the replacement of exterior finishes, reconfiguration of complex skylight systems, metal panel systems in addition to the roofing systems. The interior renovation involved disabled access upgrades, new fire and life safety systems, coordination with exhibit designer, and new interior finishes. Also, at the direction of the California Science Center, design studies were conducted to resolve design conflicts inherent in the original planning and design of the project.
